My Thumb is Green

It occurred to me the other day, as I was looking over my fingernails, that fall must be near at hand (get it? heehe!) because, of all reasons, my thumbnail was green. Why would that mean fall, you ask?

Let me give you a hint:
Green beans! Or green pole beans, as you see here.

Snapping all those beans on the front porch is the green thumb nail culprit, but also the surest sign that (sigh) fall is coming...

Other signs are that our melons are plumping up. Hopefully they have time to gain a little more yet!

Another sure sign is that the garden is at its craziest, most jungle-like stage right now.

And, if you're not careful, you can vanish right into it and never get out with clean thumbs again!

Though the gallons of cukes might be an even exchange for the green thumbs...

A kitchen table buried under baskets, bowls and buckets of harvested food in their various stages of preservation also bares evidence towards my claim. The pleasant smell of pickles in the cold room, the basket of ripening tomatoes on the counter, the crunch of apples in every little kid's mouth, the talk of Christmas and the shaggy bunnies are just a few of the multitudes of other sure signs.

But perhaps the saddest of all these?

My flowers are dying down!! :-(

Blasted winter, if you didn't come with Christmas, you'd never be tolerated around here!!
